Welcome

Hello! Thank you for visiting my website. Whether you stumbled upon this site by accident or are purposefully seeking more information about me and my teaching, scholarly, and/or creative work, I appreciate you stopping by.

Who is Dr. K.?

Thanks for asking! I have been teaching writing at the university level for nearly two decades, including the past dozen years as a tenured or tenure-track faculty member. Primarily, I teach courses in technical communication, journalism, and digital media. In general, my courses emphasize user experience (UX), design thinking, and problem solving. I also teach courses with a focus on digital media creation, especially podcasting.

My teaching is influenced by my professional experiences as a technical/professional writer in the technologies industry and an outdoor journalist. I enjoy sharing my professional experiences with my students, as I encourage them to draw from their own lived experiences to consider how writing will be used in their academic, professional, civic, and personal endeavors.

Beyond teaching, my scholarship has been published in IEEE Transactions on Professional CommunicationCommunication Design Quarterly, Programmatic Perspectives, and the edited collection, Teaching Content Management in Technical and Professional Communication. I have presented my research at conferences such as: Council for Programs in Technical and Professional Communication, The Association of Teachers of Technical Writing, and the Computers and Writing.

And please stay tuned. I am currently in the process of creating an exciting new podcast with colleagues and friends, Bill Williamson of Saginaw Valley State University and Steve Benninghoff of Eastern Michigan University, about technical and professional communication. The podcast will launch fall 2024.
